A robin sings to me in the night

This loneliness
I come back to it
It comes back to me
We meet again

The moment when I flee
comes unannounced
It is familiar:
An easy escape
that never satisfies

My own warm gaze
when it comes
is unexpected
Like the sun on a December day.
Heart opening
The thawing of what was holding on,
rigid in its terror

A robin sings to me in the night:
“You were never alone my child
I was here all along.”
